Description
The ÖSD Certificate A1 is an exam that certifies basic German language skills and follows the guidelines of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Level A1 is the first level of the CEFR scale and is designed for absolute beginners in the German language.
Objectives and Requirements of the ÖSD Certificate A1
The A1 certificate demonstrates that a person can:
- Understand and use everyday expressions and simple phrases aimed at meeting concrete needs (e.g., introducing oneself, asking for directions, simple shopping tasks),
- Communicate in very simple conversations with a patient conversation partner,
- Provide basic information about oneself and others (e.g., name, residence, age, profession).
Structure of the Exam
The ÖSD Certificate A1 exam consists of the following parts:
- Reading Comprehension – Understanding simple texts and descriptions from everyday life.
- Listening Comprehension – Gathering information from short, slow audio sequences on familiar topics.
- Writing – Writing short, simple notes and messages, such as a brief email or a postcard.
- Speaking – Engaging in basic everyday conversational situations, such as introducing oneself, answering questions about oneself, and making simple requests.
Target Group and Relevance
The certificate is particularly relevant for:
- Adults and young people beginning to learn German,
- Individuals living in or planning to move to a German-speaking country who need basic language skills for everyday life,
